Appliance Repair Clinic

Class Time: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

This half-day appliance repair class provides maintenance professionals with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to diagnose and repair common household appliances found in multifamily housing. The course focuses on troubleshooting techniques, preventative maintenance tips, and safety procedures to improve appliance lifespan and reduce service calls.

Class Topics Include:

  • Appliance Safety Basics: Safe handling practices, lockout/tagout (LOTO) considerations, and when to call for professional repairs.

  • Major Kitchen Appliances:

    • Refrigerators: Diagnosing common cooling issues, cleaning coils, and replacing door seals.

    • Electric and Gas Ranges: Troubleshooting burners, ignitors, and oven heating problems.

    • Dishwashers: Identifying drainage issues, filter cleaning, and common electrical problems.

  • Laundry Appliances:

    • Washers: Addressing drain clogs, spin cycle problems, and door seal replacements.

    • Dryers: Lint trap maintenance, heating element checks, and proper venting to prevent fires.

  • Garbage Disposals: Diagnosing jams, motor resets, and safe removal/replacement techniques.

  • Microwaves (Basic Overview): Common minor issues and identifying signs that require replacement or professional repair.

  • Troubleshooting Techniques: Step-by-step process for diagnosing appliance problems using basic tools and multimeters.

  • Preventative Maintenance Tips: Cleaning, inspections, and small fixes that extend appliance life and reduce resident complaints.

Kevin Nordhagen, our NMA Instructor joined the NMA in November 2024. Kevin is an army veteran who has work in many areas of construction and property management. He started his building career with new home construction, learning each of the trades then getting into commercial construction. Kevin has spent many years in the property management sector as a maintenance technician, special projects tech, and Maintenance Supervisor. Kevin chose to cross over to the office for a while just to learn the other have of property management.
